ANDRIY VIYTOVYCH
Professor at the Royal College of Music in London and first viola in the Valencia orchestra

Born in Ukraine, Andriy Viytovych is a graduate of the Lviv Conservatory and the International
Menuhin Music Academy in Switzerland. His main influences during his studies were Johannes
Eskaer and Alberto Lysy with whom he has gone on to collaborate as a concerto soloist and chamber
musician.

In 1996 Andriy was appointed as co-principal viola of the London Symphony Orchestra and in the
year 2000 joined the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House as principal viola, a position he held for 20
years. In 2000 he was also appointed as a professor of viola at the Royal College of Music in London,
a teaching position that he holds to this day.

Andriy has been invited to play principal viola with many of the world’s finest orchestras. In the UK
alone he has guest led the viola sections of the BBC Symphony, English Sinfonia, Scottish Chamber,
Sinfonia of London, London Symphony, London Sinfonietta, London Philharmonic and John Wilson
Orchestras. In 2003 Andriy accepted an invitation from Sir Simon Rattle to play principal viola with
the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Sir Simon himself. During his career Andriy has
worked with some of the world’s greatest conductors. As well as Sir Simon he has worked with
Pierre Boulez, Sir Colin Davis, Bernard Haitink, Mstislav Rostropovich and Sir Georg Solti.

Andriy’s enthusiasm for chamber music has led to collaboration with numerous chamber music
ensembles. These include the London Symphony Orchestra Chamber Players, Camerata Lysy, Russian
Chamber Orchestra of London, Razumovsky Ensemble and Covent Garden Soloists. During his time in
Switzerland Andriy was fortunate enough to play chamber music with Lord Yehudi Menuhin.

As a soloist, Andriy Viytovych has played with orchestras throughout Europe as well as Argentina,
Japan, Russia, Ukraine and the USA. He has also appeared as a soloist in many international festivals
including Solsona International Festival, Cortona Festival and most notably at the BBC Proms in
London.

His repertory includes all the major viola concertos, sonatas and recital repertoire.
